If you want to get as close as possible to the Pre-Columbian Maya civilisation, then there are few better places to visit than the ancient Mayan city of Tulum, on the south east coast of Mexico. El Castillo, the Temple of the Frescoes, and the Temple of the Descending God, all in the historic core of Tulum, remain three of the most famous surviving Maya structures in the world.

Sample Historic Tulum

Investigating the three major structures of the historic Mayan city and learning about their history can be a lot of fun. Images of the Mayan "diving god" can be spotted throughout the Temples of the Frescoes and the Descending God, while the 7.5m-tall Castillo was likely described in the first published detailed description of the ruins in 1843.

Conveniently, the archaeological site is relatively close to the tourist developments on the Mexican Caribbean coastline. These consist of the wider town of Tulum (the pueblo), the hotel zone (the zone hotelara) and the biosphere reserve of Sian Ka'an.

You will also find many intriguing places to eat and drink during one of our holidays to Tulum. Charlie's restaurant, in the pueblo, serves delicious meals, while there are many deluxe beach cabañas on the road leading to Punta Allen. Speaking of the beach
