Acapulco is also the largest and oldest resort on the coast, so if you’re looking to relax on the beach this is a great place to stay. It has a deep, semi-circular bay, lively nightlife and relaxed promenade bars along the Costera Road. It also offers a range of exciting activities from para-sailing an scuba diving, to golf and deep-sea fishing. Another terrific choice is the twin resorts at the foot of the Baja CaliIfornia peninsula – Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo. These are newer developments, growing from what was originally a fishing village, and boast some terrific nightlife. Each year you’ll see whale pods off the famous cliff arches and it’s also known for the cliff-diving by local youths, truly spectacular and terrifying sights!
- Just across from the peninsula by ferry, you’ll find the city of Mazatlan, overlooked by the El Faro lighthouse. With twenty miles of beaches, and still a fishing town, it’s popular with locals and Americans on holidays to the Pacific coast of Mexico. The Malecon or promenade here is a great place to wander, starting from Ola Atlas Beach right the way down to the Sandy Dolphin Beach. Further along the coast you’ll come to Puerto Vallerta, a pretty town and famous since the 1950s when it was favoured by Hollywood stars - it still retains its charm. Here you can wander the markets, visit the old church of Our Lady of Guadalupe, before heading for the beach.
