Things to do

Whether you're looking for a romantic weekend away, a family holiday or a fun trip with friends, a holiday to the Netherlands on an Amsterdam city break has everything you could possibly want.

See world-famous works of art at the Van Gogh museum or the Rijksmuseum, or take in a slice of history at the Anne Frank house or just enjoy a stroll around the pretty walk ways.

The city's traffic free streets are one of the many things that make trips to Amsterdam ideal for a relaxing weekend getaway, with bicycles and trams being the most popular ways to get around.

Out and about

No short break to Amsterdam is complete without a trip on the canals, why not explore the waterways in a hired boat? Or take a magical dinner cruise to see the city by night if you are seeking some romance during your trip. Cafe culture is very popular here and there are hundreds of street cafes and covered terraces where you can watch the world go by over a coffee or a glass of wine. There's also plenty to keep shoppers happy, with an assortment of exciting markets specialising in everything from art to antiques. The famous Bloemenmarkt, boasts the title of the only floating flower market in the world and is well worth a visit.

Most places are within walking distance too, so there's no excuse not to try out some of the delicious locally brewed beer at a traditional 'bruine kroeg', or head to the Nieuwezjids Voorburgwa district where you will find fashionable bars. When the sun goes down, you'll find hundreds of bars and clubs where you can party into the early hours.

Amsterdam holidays are ideal for food lovers, with hundreds of restaurants and cafes serving up international and gourmet cuisine as well as the quirky snacks the city has become famous for – try frites with mayonnaise, or the moreishly sweet stroopwafels. While the weather can be changeable, the city enjoys many days of glorious sunshine, and with plenty to do both inside and out, Amsterdam makes an ideal choice whatever the weather.
