Napier at a Glance
The North Island city of Napier was rebuilt after an earthquake devastated the city in 1931. Now Hawke Bay’s largest city, Napier is an evocative and affordable city filled with Art-Deco buildings and is a hub for lovers of architecture. Hawke Bay is wine country and the countryside is filled with vineyards as well as fruit orchards.
Explore Napier
- Go on an Art-Deco tour of the city, either self-guided or do an organised walking tour in the morning, afternoon or evening. Take a minibus tour of Art-Deco places outside of Napier.
- Ahuriri is a harbour side suburb of the city where the old industrial warehouses have been converted and now buzz with bars and restaurants – a great place to spend the evening. By day take photos of the National Tobacco Company Building, which is probably one of the most iconic Art-Deco buildings in New Zealand.
- Take a stroll along the 2km boulevard of Marine Parade, which manages to evoke a strong British seaside feel but with a Mediterranean-like climate.
Why a Holiday to Napier?
- A holiday to Napier manages to combine the bonuses of being in a city with the adventure of outdoor activities. In Napier visit Hawke’s Bay Museum and Art Gallery to see Maori artefacts and a moving memorial gallery of the 1931 earthquake. For an afternoon of relaxation head to Ocean Spa, a hot pool complex next to the beach, offering massages and beauty treatments.
- The National Aquarium of New Zealand is a fantastic day out and one the whole family will enjoy. The Aquarium is split into sections including the marine environments of Africa, Australia and Asia. The impressive ocean tank has underwater views of rays and occasional sharks. If you’re qualified you can go scuba diving with the sharks. For another exhilarating shark experience, visit Gisborne City and head offshore for some cage diving.
- Go on gorging and kayaking trips or climb the indoor climbing wall at the Ahuriri based Kiwi Adventure Co. There’s good surfing to be found at Cape Kidnappers and also a Garnet colony at certain times of the year. Make time to travel further afield to the Pukaha Mount Bruce National Wildlife Centre, which is home to rare birds such as the kiwi, kokako and hihi. For a true New Zealand adventure holiday in 2012, Taupo is a must.
- Napier is the place to go for delicious food and wine. Feast on fish and seafood at Pacifica on Marine Parade, stuff yourself with mussel fritters at Fish Outta Water and enjoy wonderfully creative dishes at Provedore in Ahuriri. Check out the local vineyards as well, and enjoy the numerous wine tours on offer.
