Why a Holiday to New Plymouth?
There are plenty of things to do on a holiday to New Plymouth.
- For fantastic contemporary art visit the Govett-Brewster Art Gallery where Len Lye’s work is on display. The Wind Wand, a bright red 45m high tube topped with a light globe that glows red, sways and lights up the night sky, was designed by Lye in 1962 and is an iconic New Plymouth sight.
- The Puke Ariki is a visitor centre, museum and exhibition space all in one. The museum in particular has an interesting Maori section featuring volcanic rock carvings. Spend an afternoon at Pukekura Park, a lovely city park with a boating lake, glasshouses and a cricket pitch. The trees and paths are illuminated during the Annual Festival of Lights, which takes place between mid-December and mid-February.
- During clear weather – and when it’s open to the public – head to the new Plymouth Observatory for a public viewing from its 15cm refractor telescope. For stunning coastal views out towards Sugar Loaf Islands Marine Reserve climb the 200m high natural fortress of Paritutu.
- After a hard day walking and sightseeing feast on seafood and steak or Middle Eastern influenced dishes at Bach on Breakwater restaurant, or head to Frederic’s, a gastro-bar serving delicious hearty plates of food. For more great food and drink in New Zealand, our experts also recommend that you head to Napier for some fabulous seafood and some great local wines.
