Tairua Holidays

Tairua at a Glance

The town of Tairua, on North Island’s Coromandel Peninsula, is twinned with neighbouring Pauanui, which lies on the other side of a river estuary. Both Tairua and Pauanui have great beaches for surfing but other than that the towns couldn’t be more different. Tairua is a residential town filled with shops and restaurants and is an ideal base for a holiday to the region, while Pauanui is the summer playground of very rich Aucklanders. A holiday to Tairua is low key, friendly and accessible for all.

You’ll Love Tairua If…

  • You’re a seasoned surfer or want to learn as there are great surf beaches right on the doorstep at Tairua and Pauanui and further along the coast at trendy Whangamata.
  • You’re a family wanting a New Zealand beach holiday with safe swimming at the sheltered harbour beaches.
  • You want an affordable coastal town as a base to explore the Coromandel Peninsula.

Explore Tairua

A holiday to Tairua is all about the beaches, surfing and other water-based activities.

  • Hire kayaks, scuba diving and snorkelling equipment from Tairua Dive and Fishinn, and head out into the estuary. Take a fishing or dive trip to the amazing Alderman Islands.

  • Paku, is a craggy peak that forms the harbours northern point and was once, millions of years ago, a volcanic island. It’s only a 15 minute – although very steep – walk to the top, but worth it for the incredible views over Tairua, Pauanui and out to the Alderman Islands. Learn about the colonial history of Tairua from the informative plaques dotted along the route.

  • There are plenty of cafes, restaurants, bars, gift shops and art galleries to discover when you’re not out surfing, walking or lounging on the beach.

Why a Holiday to Tairua?

  • Explore the Coromandel Peninsula. Lying to the east of Auckland and jutting out into the Pacific Ocean, there are some fantastic white sand beaches dotted on the east coast of the peninsula with great walking and hiking to be found in the mountainous region that runs through the middle of Coromandel.

  • The nearby coastal town of Whangamata, like Tairua, is a great summer destination due to its surf beach and young city vibe. Likewise, pay a visit to Whitianga and enjoy the sandy beaches at Mercury Bay. There’s plenty of diving and kayaking to be found off the coast at the Te Whanganui A Hei Marine Reserve. Also nearby are Cathedral Cove and Hot Water Beach.

  • Further afield is quaint Coromandel Town with its historic buildings and pretty cafes. Don’t leave without trying mouth wateringly good smoked mussels.
