Silves Holiday Information
To experience a little of Portuguese history, take a step back in time and enter Silves city. There are still traces in Silves dating back to around 1,000 BC. Whilst a lot of Silves was destroyed as were many other areas in the Algarve in the 1755 earthquake, there is the Moors underground water reservoirs, the museum built over the “Cistern of the Enchanted Moorish Girl”, the cathedral of which parts date back to the 13th century and the Roman bridge, Ponte Romana.
Silves Castle is the largest in the Algarve with 11 towers and grounds of about 1200 metres squared in size. The countryside surrounding Silves used to be the biggest orange growing area in Portugal; today it is still well known for its quality of fruit yet is a quiet market town, worth visiting for its history and attractive scenery.
There is a good selection of hotels and self catering properties in the Silves area, and a cheap holiday in Silves is the perfect way to combine historic discoveries and lazy days in the beach – all part of exploring this fascinating region.
