Discovering Riyadh

As the capital of Saudi Arabia, Riyadh is really at the heart of the Middle East. The capital is mostly oriented around business rather than pleasure but there are some fascinating places to visit.

• Riyadh is about 250 miles from the sea, so there are no beaches nearby. A lot of the hotels in the area do have pools though, so if you want to take the kids swimming you do have the chance to.
• The city is surrounded by the desert and it makes for some pretty breathtaking sightseeing. Just head to the edge of the Tuwaig Escarpment, just under 20 miles from the city, for an amazing view down a 200m drop into the dunes.
• If you feel the need to splash the cash then head to one of Riyadh’s many shopping malls. There’s one on pretty much every street corner, and the swankiest are probably Al Faisaliah and Al Mamlaka.

• Even though most Saudis have never touched a golf club there are some great golf courses in the area! Whether you’re an experienced player or want to take a few lessons you’re sure to find something to suit.
• The amazing Kingdom Centre is the second tallest building in Saudi Arabia and is a great place to visit at night for the incredible view from the Skybridge that connects the two peaks of the skyscraper.
• For a touch of culture head to the Murabba Palace, which contains the country’s first ever royal Rolls Royce. You can also visit the National Museum which is right next door and open to families in the afternoon.
