The ancient seaport and city of Cartagena is one of the most exciting and diverse holiday destinations on the Costa Blanca but it’s hard to know what to do first so we’ve come up with a list of tips to help you make the most of your time in this fantastic city.

Cartagena beaches:

  • There are many great beaches to choose from in Cartagena including Cala Cortina, Islas Menores, Playa Honda, Mar de Cristal, El Galúa beach, Levante beach and La Gola beach. The town holds the record for the highest number of beaches certified ‘Q for Quality’ in Spain
  • La Calera Beach offers water sports, Cala Cerrada Beach is perfect for diving and La Morena Beach is the local naturist spot; there’s a beach to suit everyone on a holiday in Cartagena

Cartagena activities:

  • Visit some of the Carthaginian and Roman ruins such as the remains of the Punic rampart, the restored Roman theatre of Carthago Nova and the Roman amphitheatre
  • There are many must-see ‘art nouveau’ buildings in Cartagena, including the City Hall, the Grand Hotel and the Casino
  • Take a boat tour around the island and see the area from a different viewpoint; a great photo opportunity and a chance to cool down with a sea breeze on your holidays in Cartagena
  • Walk up to (or take the lift to) La Concepció Castle and find out more about Cartagena’s history and culture whilst taking in the stunning views
  • Visit La Manga Club on nearby La Manga del Mar Menor for a huge range of sports activities, including tennis, squash, mountain biking, horse riding, crazy golf, go karting and sea fishing
  • Golf lovers will be happy to hear that Costa Blanca is bursting with golf courses, including some near Cartagena such as Club de Golf Torre-Pacheco, La Manga Club Resort and Mar Menor Golf Resort
  • Mar Menor is the perfect spot for practising or starting a new water sport, as the water is relatively shallow and very calm. You’ll find diving schools, windsurfing lessons and water skis to rent and the beaches are great for swimming

Cartagena nightlife:

  • Head to the old town of Cartagena for a romantic meal or quiet night out. There are plenty of cosy tavernas and local restaurants, perfect for cuddling up to your loved one or sampling some of the local delicacies. Many nightspots will have live music or dancing too

  • There’s nothing like sea air to give you an appetite; head to the seaside restaurants and cafes as the sun sets and get a great table overlooking the bay

Other attractions near Cartagena:

  • If you want to give your credit card an airing, head to Murcia for some of the best shops and boutiques in Costa Blanca
  • Torrevieja Aquopolis Water Park is just a short drive away so if you’ve hired a car this attraction makes a fantastic family day out with its giant water slides and pools. If the kids prefer theme parks then the area’s best, Terra Mitica, is just an hour’s drive away; a perfect way to spend your family holiday in Cartagena
