Today there are some remaining parts of the city’s 18th century walls, but for picturesque charm, a trip to the old quarter of Cadiz, reflects some more of its historic links, with narrow cobbled streets, Moorish appearance and the golden cupola of the cathedral high above the white washed houses.
There are a number of museums and monuments to visit in Cadiz as well as many restaurants, especially tapas bars, and a good selection of shops. Nature lovers will enjoy the Donana National Park which was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
More about Cadiz
At the end of Cadiz is a huge stretch of sandy beach covering over 3 km called La Victoria. As it reaches Santa Maria del Mar Beach it becomes narrower but is well accessed by many ramps and steps leading down from the promenade. La Victoria has been awarded the Blue Flag and small beach bars and facilities are available in the peak summer months. La Caleta Beach can get quite busy and is close to the two forts, Castle of Santa Catalina and San Sebastian. Head out of Cadiz and Playa de la Cortadura to a heavenly stretch of fine white sand stretching out over 2.5 km.
