Located between Jerez de la Frontera and Cadiz on the Costa de la Luz, El Puerto de Santa Maria is a hidden gem along this section of the Atlantic coast. The approach into El Puerto de Santa Maria may not be particularly scenic, but once in the heart of the old town you will find pretty pedestrianised orange tree lined, cobbled streets and beautiful architecture complemented by intricate wrought iron work and decorative tiles.

There is much history linked to El Puerto de Santa Maria; explore the Castle of San Marcos whilst in Puerto de Santa Maria as it is the many historic monuments which have meant that the town has been declared a Site of Cultural Interest.

There is a famous bullring in El Puerto (short for El Puerto de Santa Maria), where bullfighting takes place during the Feria season in August and during the Spring Fair in May. There are a number of bodgas in El Puerto de Santa Maria where sherry is distilled; tours and tastings are available. There is a good choice of restaurants and cafes in El Puerto de Santa Maria and the food is particularly tasty as the area produces a wealth of fresh fruit, vegetables, and of course the fish are freshly caught. A small ferry can be taken from El Puerto de Santa Maria across the bay to Cadiz for interesting day trips.

Incredible Costa De La Luz Beach Holidays

Nestled between the Portugese border and Spain’s Costa del Sol, is the Costa de la Luz or “Coast of Light”.

The sand is finer and more golden than Costa del Sol, and the beaches are generally more spread out and backed by sand dunes and pine trees. You can choose from natural, virgin beaches to others with facilities and infrastructure, from small isolated coves and fishing ports to beaches stretching for miles, and from family beaches to others more secluded.

The Costa de la Luz is 100 kilometres of sandy beach bliss with varied water sports opportunities, and you will not find the high-rise hotel developments of other areas, which makes holidays in Costa de la Luz a popular choice. There is a huge selection of water sports, golf, fishing, gliding and mountain biking, and the Bay of Cadiz annually hosts the “Tall Ships” regatta.
