Costa Tropical Holiday Information
On Spain’s Mediterranean coastline situated between the Costa del Sol and Costa de Almeria, is the Costa Tropical. Not nearly as well know as its neighbours, visitors to the Costa Tropical find that it is easy to escape the crowds.
Costa Tropical’s coast is a picturesque holiday location with protected coves like that at Punta de la Mona and promontories like the popular old town of Almanecar. There are Moorish castles, sugar cane plantations, water sports galore, hillside white villages and bull rings. The Costa Tropical boasts a subtropical climate so tends to be sunny most of the year.
Almunecar is the ideal holiday location to combine relaxing on a lovely beach with exploring a pretty historic town. For water sports and a secluded horseshoe shaped bay head to La Herradura with its popular shingle and sand beach and clear waters perfect for scuba diving. The Paseo Andres Segovia is where most of the restaurants are located and in the evenings enjoy the daily caught sardines, barbecued for your evening meal!
Beaches in Costa Tropical
Playa de la Herradura is one of the prettiest beaches on the Costa Tropical. This beach at La Herradura stretches the full two kilometres of the bay and mainly consists of sand, and has a number of beach bars and great choice of water sports to offer.
The most isolated beach in the Costa Tropical is probably Playa de Cantarrijan which has been designated a nudist beach although the western side of the beach is mainly used by bathers wishing to wear swimming clothes.
Playa San Cristobal is the western beach in Almunecar where many of the hotels and apartments are located, a superb stretch of sand and shingle with summertime water sports on offer. Almunecar’s main beach is Playa Puerta del Mar and it is here that the town’s aquapark may be found.
Explore Costa Tropical
Salobrena is a beautiful white village clinging to the rocks and overlooked by a 10th century Moorish castle. There are Roman remains throughout the village and a visit is a day trip not to be missed.
Do visit Loro Sexi Bird Park in Almunecar where you will find over a thousand birds from doves to ostriches; the park has restricted opening hours but is an attraction loved by all ages. Flora enthusiast will enjoy the botanical gardens at the Parque del Majuelo which is also where the remains of a fish salting factory are. This is a super area to take a walk and climb to Almunecar’s Morrish castle for wonderful views.
About four kilometres from Almunecar are the remains of a Roman Aquaduct which was used up until a few decades ago. There is a tourist office near the Parque del Majuelo where maps for explorers may be obtained.
