Gran Canaria holidays - Insider Tips

Gran Canaria has been a popular tourist destination for years with the popular resorts offering exactly what British holiday makers need; good food, lots of drink and blue clear sea. So what are the ‘not to be missed’ holiday experiences? Let lowcostholidays.com help you out with our insider tips.

When is the best time to go?

Granaria enjoys a tropical climate all year round. The high seasons are May to October and December to February and the climate is ideal for water sports throughout the year. Winter temperatures are around 23 degrees, with around a six degree difference from summer and winter. Summer months are popular with the 18-30’s crowd.

Gran Canaria nights out

Gran Canaria has a reputation of having one of the best nightlife’s in the Canaries. The most prominent area for this has to be Playa del Ingles, which is chock a block with nightclubs and bars aimed to give you a fantastic night you probably won’t remember. Every kind of bar you could possibly dream of exists in this area. The most popular clubs such as Joy and Cream don’t get going until around 1am – so a day time siesta is a must if you want survive the night.

If you’re heading out for the night in Playa del Ingles, make sure you take an open mind with you. Over the years the resort has grown a lively gay scene, which is mainly focused around the Yumbo centrum.

If you’re a more reserved holiday maker, travelling to Gran Canaria with your family, resorts also cater for you. With a host of child friendly bars you’ll find something that suits your family. The ‘Nags Head Bar’ is a particular highlight with an Only Fools theme that the whole family can enjoy. Mange tout, Rodders.

Hidden Gems

If you fancy mixing it up on your break to Gran Canaria, lowcostholidays.com recommends the Island Helicopter Ride. Take a 30 minute ride over the island and appreciate all the natural and man-made beauty it has to offer. Breathtaking views and thrill make this an attraction not to be missed.

How’s the shopping?

Gran Canaria, like the other Canary Islands is partly tax free. The price of tobacco, spirits and perfumes will be cheaper than in EU countries. Don’t forget the airline limits on these goods though.

Food glorious food…

An average meal in Gran Canaria shouldn’t cost more than 5 -10 Euros if you’re on a budget, 10 – 15 Euros for a midrange meal and the sky’s the limit if you fancy living the high life.

The mandatory worries

Here’s some useful information to remember when you’re on your holiday to Gran Canaria:

Can I drink the water?

  • You can drink it, but we do not recommend it. Pick up a cheap bottle of water.

What’s the 999 number?

  • Gran Canaria emergency services can be contacted on 112.

Shall I pack the sun cream?

  • Gran Canaria’s year round sunshine means that sun cream is a must.

How do I get around?

  • Taxi’s are cheap and a fast way to travel – and a lot cooler. Be warned though, Spanish drivers can be a little erratic.

Shall I learn the local lingo?

  • Nope. A lot of bars and restaurants are run by British patrons and those people that are local probably speak better English than most of us.

Do I need to tip?

  • It’s not compulsory, add a little 5-10% if there isn’t a service charge and you’re happy.
