Visitors can enjoy the calm surroundings of a former fishing village, whilst only being a short walk away from the shops, restaurants and nightlife of its lively neighbour Puerto Del Carmen.
Whether you’re taking a family holiday or romantic break, the relaxed atmosphere and excellent facilities make this resort a superb place for your Lanzarote holidays.
Matagorda boasts a blue flag beach which has shallow, clear waters, perfect for children. The Atlantic sea breeze makes this beach extremely popular with windsurfers, making this a great all round beach. You’ll find plenty of activities for the whole family, with snorkelling, scuba diving, deep sea fishing and even banana boating! You are only 4km away from famous resort Puerto del Carmen where the large golden beaches can also be reached by a pretty seafront walk from Matagorda.
The elegant marina at nearby Puerto Calero makes a great day trip too, where you can simply admire the huge yachts that are moored there or even hire your own boats. There are underground caves to explore nearby, as well as dolphin and whale watching trips, tennis, golf and horse riding. The must see attraction in Lanzarote is the spectacular Timanfaya National Park with its dramatic volcanic landscape. If you’re feeling really adventurous you can take a camel trek around the park!
If you fancy some retail therapy then you can find everything from handmade leather goods, perfect for souvenirs, to fresh fruit and vegetables and upmarket boutiques. Head to the markets in Puerto del Carmen for the best bargains.
You'll find a fantastic range of bars and restaurants to cater for all budgets in Matagorda, with local rather than tourist prices. Head to the central square where you can choose from international cuisine ranging from local seafood, to Greek, Chinese or Italian. After a day in the gorgeous sunshine, relax and unwind in a waterfront pub or bar, with a lot of venues hosting evening entertainment. If you fancy a livelier night out, you’ll find late night bars and clubs in Puerto Del Carmen.
Matagorda is ideal for a beach break, as it is home to a large sandy beach, which is sprinkled with palm trees and lined by a lovely promenade. You can spend your days lazing here under the sun, in between dips in the sea and visits to the bars and cafes nearby.
You can try a range of water sports from Matagorda Beach. Have some fun trying jet skiing and water skiing, or head across the waves on a banana boat or a pedalo. The surf schools nearby are great for lessons in surfing and wind surfing, and there are plenty of boat trips available as well.
There is no better way to explore Matagorda and the surrounding area than by hiring a bike and taking a few cycling trips. The promenade along the beach is the ideal place to start, as it stretches towards some of the other beautiful beaches in the area.
If you feel like venturing further afield, there is no better way to do it than by boat, which is also a great way of seeing the coast from afar. You can book your place on various voyages around Lanzarote, on fishing and diving trips, or even travel to the neighbouring island of Fuerteventura.
Lanzarote’s east coast is known for its large beaches, and Playa de Matagorda is no exception. A lengthy stretch of over a kilometre, its blend of soft sand and tiny volcanic stones is followed by a lovely promenade which is filled with restaurants and bars.
