Best Beaches

If you're planning to visit at the end of July you'll experience the Fiesta de Carmen with its folklore performances and singing and dancing!

It comes to life by night with bars, nightclubs and casinos to keep you entertained into the small hours. For something less lively, then you can head to the restaurants at the harbour or look for family entertainment on offer along the main road.

Scuba diving in Lanzarote is unforgettable with its unique underwater landscape formed by years of volcanic activity.

Handgliding or Paragliding. If you have always wanted to try a different sport then Lanzarote is one of the best places to try your hand at free flight. Exposed to wind from all directions and with departure points that you can reach on foot, take in the spectacular views of the island.

Beaches in Puerto del Carmen

Playa Grande

Also known as Playa Blanca, but called Playa Grande so as not to confuse with the other resort, this golden beach is 1.2 kilometres long and has a long promenade with a fantastic range of cafés and shops for refreshments during a day at the beach. It is easily accessible by all and is the most popular beach in Puerto del Carmen.

Playa de los Pocillos

This long beach is the perfect beach in Lanzarote for learning to wind surf, or just enjoying the waves if you already practice the sport. The promenade stretches beyond the beach in both directions so you can walk along to Matagorda and Puerto del Carmen. This wide beach has enough room for everyone and is popular with families due to the excellent facilities. The waters are clear and shallow, so perfect for swimming.


Matagorda is a quieter beach, but boasts the Blue Flag award for cleanliness and has excellent conditions for swimming. Matagorda is the place to head to if you enjoy relaxing and sunbathing, as well as taking part in more active water sports. You can try snorkelling, scuba diving, deep-sea fishing and banana boats from the beach here. There is also a marina nearby which makes an excellent place to yacht watch.

Horse riding is a great, relaxing way of discovering the volcanic landscape of Lanzarote. Lanzarote a Caballo offer excursions for up to two hours as well as offering camel treks and even paintballing. They recommend that children are over seven for the excursions, but also offer pony rides for younger children.


Diving in Lanzarote gives you the chance to explore the amazing underwater world and see the beautiful seabed that has been formed by the volcanic eruptions.

If you have never tried scuba diving before, Lanzarote is the perfect place to give it a go! It has warm waters year round and clear visibility. If diving seems a bit too adventurous for you, there are also plenty of snorkelling opportunities. Equipment is available to hire or buy and there are guided tours that will show you the best places to see the most marine life.

The best place to shop in Puerto del Carmen is the main beach avenue, where you will find everything from duty-free to local art and leather goods, to boutique shops where you can pick up something that you can guarantee no one else at home will have!

If you want a slightly more upmarket shopping experience, head to the Biosfera shopping complex, where you will find designer shops and great souvenirs.

Events in Lanzarote

The festivities that take place at the end of February attract visitors from all over Europe and the street parties and parades are unforgettable! There are highly-decorated floats and the bars and cafés spill on to the roads. Remember your camera if you are travelling to Lanzarote at this time!

They also celebrate their patron saint at the end of July, which results in another great fiesta with parties, fireworks and decorated boats bobbing around in the harbour.

Blue Sea Kontiki Club Apartments

These apartments are perfectly placed for exploring the island, the bus top is just 300 metres down the road and the shops and restaurants within the resort are just a short walk away. They are just 13 kilometres from the airport so the short transfer time is great if you are travelling with young children. The apartments are set in their own gardens and have their own kitchenette and most have sea or pool views.

Things to do

This resort is great for active family holidays and is a haven for water sports, including diving and windsurfing. There is a new golf course not far away and the port is also a popular fishing spot. Sunbathing and shopping are other always popular and there is plenty of opportunity for both here.

Just a 15-minute transfer time from the airport you can enjoy the swimming pool and attractive gardens within minutes of arriving.

The Hotel Blue Sea Los Fiscos is in the old town of Puerto del Carmen and just 900 metres from the beach and 500 metres from the harbour. There is a great children's entertainment programme during school holidays, that runs events during the day and in the evenings.
