Cala Bona Uncovered – Insider Tips
Here are some handy tips, to help you to get the most from your holiday to Cala Bona.
Transport
Cala Bona is located on the quieter, eastern coast of Majorca. The closest airport can be found at Palma, and transfers will usually take around 2 hours.
If you’re looking to hire a car from Palma, you should be able to make the journey in under an hour and a half – but be warned, the local government recently renumbered many of the roads in the area, so make sure your map is up to date!
Taxis in Cala Bona
You’ll be able to find plenty of taxis on duty, as you walk through the streets of Cala Bona. It is always worth putting some time into picking your driver carefully, however. While many taxis claim to operate on a ‘fixed rate’, you may find that this price varies depending on the number of passengers, the amount of luggage, and so on. One good solution to this, is to pre-book all your taxi journeys while in Cala Bona. You’ll be able to get the numbers for reputable local firms from your hotel, and this will help to take some of the stress out of planning your transport around the resort.
The Resort
Unlike some of the other resort towns on Majorca, Cala Bona was not purpose built for tourism. Instead, it started out as a traditional fishing village, which has grown to accommodate the increasing number of visitors. As a result, the town features many narrow and winding streets, making it quite easy to get lost! It’s worth keeping a map with you as you explore, but you’re likely to find that the locals are very friendly and welcoming.
Eating and Drinking
One of the benefits of Cala Bona’s low-key, village atmosphere, is that you’ll find many of the bars and restaurants here are much cheaper than their counterparts in larger towns such as Palma. Don’t be afraid to explore a little, and you’ll find back streets and hidden plazas filled with open-air restaurants, market stalls and quaint little bars.
The Beaches
Cala Bona boasts some fantastic beaches, but if you want to avoid the crowds, sometimes it is worth walking a little further before you settle down. The long golden beach here stretches for almost 2km, and you will find it increasingly quiet the further you walk! Starting out from Cala Bona (which translates as 'Good Bay'), try heading along the coast towards the more secluded beaches at Cala Millor (meaning ‘Better Bay'). The clue’s in the name…!
