Palma City holidays uncovered - Insider Tips

Palma City is an ideal location when you fancy a bit of a cultural escape from the beaches of Palma Nova or Magaluf. Full of museums, galleries and castles, it gives you an idea of some of the rich history of Majorca. To make the most of your holiday check out lowcostholidays.com’s insider tips; you never know, it might come in handy!

Spectacular nights out

You won’t find the streets of Palma City lined with karaoke bars or foam parties, but head to the Paseo Maritimo and you’ll find Pacha nestled into the cliff overlooking the luxurious yachts moored in Palma’s horseshoe-shaped marina. Undoubtedly one of the biggest and best known nightclubs, it’s open from 10pm to 6am so you’ll have time for breakfast at the hotel before you can recover on the beach whilst soaking up the sun.

Hidden Gems

The Museum of Spanish Contemporary Art houses a small collection of 20th century Spanish Art, including pieces from Picasso, Dali and Miro. Housed in a cool, 17th century mansion, it’s a tranquil escape from the hustle and bustle.

How’s the shopping?

A visit to Palma isn’t complete without visiting one of the many street markets that take place throughout the district. They start at dawn and end before the sun gets really hot, so get up early for the best bargains and a chance to haggle.

The Mercat Artisanal is a lively craft market, which takes place on the Plaza Major throughout the year Monday to Saturday 10am to 2pm. However, if you’re after Zara and El Corte Ingles, then head to the Plaza Juan Carlos where you’ll find the main shopping centre. Remember though that all shops are closed on a Sunday, so don’t leave your bargain hunting until then!

Where can I get a burger?

The restaurants in Palma City probably don’t feature burgers high on the menu. Apart from the chains such as Burger King and McD’s, then head off to the Hard Rock Café on Paseo Maritimo for their legendary burger and chips!

Get in with the locals...

Here’s some information for when you’re on your Palma City holidays:

Can I drink the water?

  • Water is reportedly ok to drink, but it doesn’t do any harm to stick to bottled water to be on the safe side.

What’s the emergency number?

  • Spain emergency services can be contacted on 112.

Shall I pack the sun cream?

  • Palma gets quite hot in the summer with temperatures up to 30 degrees; so, although the city is quite shady, always use your sun cream!

How do I get around?

  • You can grab a taxi in Palma, but there is also a surprisingly efficient bus system – the EMT. Grab a leaflet from the Tourist Information Office and spend the money you save on cabs on having fun instead!

Shall I learn the local lingo?

  • Up to you – most people speak English but it’s always a good idea to practice a few phrases.

Do I need to tip?

  • Yes, usually 10%, but check that it hasn’t already been added to the bill.
