Insider Tips
Lying in the Canaries, a hop skip and a jump away from Africa, Tenerife is bathed in warm weather all year round. So what is it about Tenerife that attracts 3 million tourists every year? Well, lowcostholidays.com has uncovered the best the island has to offer on your holidays.
When to Visit?
With top temperatures of nearly 30 degrees in summer and lows of 17 degrees in winter, Tenerife is a year round destination. Winter is popular with older travellers looking to escape the busy tourist season. Santa Cruz Carnival is the largest carnival after Rio de Janeiro. Held in February it makes for an exciting half term break.
Nightlife
If clubbing into the early hours is what you’re after, look no further than Playa de las Americas. The standout bar here is Lineker’s Bar, in the centre of the main strip. The clubs and bars are all within walking distance of each other, and it has a very English feel.
For a more authentic night out, visit Puerto de la Cruz or Santa Cruz for an exoctic night out, with great tapas and salsa dancing.
Family friendly evenings
If you’re a more reserved holidaymaker, travelling to Tenerife with your family, Los Cristianos and Playa de las Americas also have regular cabaret acts, shows, quizzes and karaoke for the whole family. Most of the larger hotels and resorts will have evening entertainment suitable for the whole family.
Hidden Gems
We recommend taking a trip up Pico Del Teide – the mountain that can be seen from all points of Tenerife. It’s the highest mountain on Spanish soil and the views are amazing. La Laguna is one of the most historic towns on the island, with winding narrow roads waiting to be explored.
Shopping
Tenerife, like the other Canary Islands is partly tax free. The price of tobacco, spirits and perfumes will be cheaper than in EU countries. Don’t forget the airline limits on these goods though. As well as markets which are great for souvenirs, Tenerife also has some great boutiques if you have room in your suitcase for some more clothes.
Local Cuisine
An average meal in Tenerife shouldn’t cost more than 5 -10 Euros if you’re on a budget, with a great range of top end restaurants available too. There is a restaurant that caters for every taste from all over the world. However, some of the smaller tapas bars are great for a more authentic dining experience. La Ranilla, the old fishing quarter in Puerto de la Cruz has some amazing seafood restaurants.
