The ancient city of Sigiriya was built by King Kasyapa around the year 473AD, and was later used as a monastery. The gigantic rock fortress known to many as the “Lion rock” stands high above the green jungle and has a wonderful network of gardens and reservoirs surrounding it. The reason for the title of “Lion Rock” comes from originally anyone climbing the steps would pass between gigantic lion paws on either side and finally, through the mouth of the lion at the top. Sadly, all that’s left today are the paws and the steps.
