Damascus Holidays 2012

Damascus at a Glance

If you are looking to disappear into a world of history, and intrigue, then pay a visit to the ancient city of Damascus. With all of the luxuries of a capital city, and the history with which few can compare, come to Damascus and see why it is the jewel of Syria.

Perfect for...

  • Small groups looking to explore some rich history.
  • Couples hoping to soak up some culture, unlike anywhere else in the world.
  • Families looking for something different than the usual beach getaway.

Why Damascus?

Being credited as being the longest continuous inhabited city in the world, Damascus dates back to 10,000 B.C. With so much history, beautiful scenery and amazing shops, you’ll be pleasantly surprised by Damascus; but, like anywhere, be safe when travelling, and check with the foreign office before booking.

  • It is a must for anyone visiting Damascus to see the city from Mount Qasioun. From there you’ll be amazed by the panoramic view, but if visited at night, you will see the city lit up, and the minarets lighted a lovely green. There are a number of restaurants and cafés atop the peak, so don’t feel obligated to pack a lunch.
  • A visit through the old city is a definite must. While strolling through, you’ll see the courtyards, and beautiful façades of this ancient city. If you continue on towards the northwest on the Souq al-Hamidiyya, a strip of road through the old town, you will run into the citadel, a large medieval structure that is a UNESCO heritage site.
  • At the other end of the Souq al-Hamidiyya is the Umayyad Mosque. This building has run the gamut of religious institutions; originally an Assyrian temple, it was at one point a mosque and church simultaneously, but now remains solely a mosque. What makes this a must see, is that it is an architectural marvel, with it’s three minarets extending far into the sky.
  • Take a bath in a Hammam, or more commonly known as, a Turkish bath. The visits are usually inexpensive, and are wonderful experience. But, remember, some establishments will not be able to cater women if you don’t make accommodations prior.
