Khao Lak is named after the national park here, Khao Lak-Lam Ru, and this really is an attraction not to be missed. Not only is it peaceful and stunning, but the amount of wildlife to be spotted here is incredible. Expect to see white-bellied sea eagles, Malayan tapir and homrai, not to mention reptiles such as the iridescent earth snake, Malayan pit viper, and white-lipped pit viper.
Khao Lak is known in the scuba diving world as the nearest jump off point for the Similan Islands, and as you wander around the shopping area of Khao Lak you will see a multitude of dive centres. The boat trip to the Similans takes an hour and a half by speedboat or three hours by conventional dive boat. Underwater the visibility is fantastic with healthy corals, plenty of fish and huge granite boulders all contributing to the fascinating seascape.
Khao Lak really only has only two seasons – the wet and the dry. The southwest monsoon brings rain and often heavy storms from April through to October, so pack a raincoat if you are travelling at this time.
