The beautiful coastal town of Gumbet was once a small traditional fishing village considered and seaside extension of the larger town of Bodrum. However in more recent years it has grown to become a popular tourist attraction and resort in its own right thanks to its fantastic beaches and buzzing nightlife that have made it a popular choice for young couples, families and groups looking to enjoy the lively atmosphere.
Gumbet features one of the longest beaches along the coast, which stretches for more than a kilometre along the horseshoe bay, it provides many excellent spots for sunbathing with many hotels providing loungers and parasols on a first come first serve basis, along with a wonderful choice of restaurants serving every kind of cuisine along with a variety bars to visit along the beach.
Much of the best shopping can be found at the marina where most of the more commercial shops can be found, however there is also great choice to be found in the town centre with more local shops selling popular goods such as leather, jewellery and carpets along with the bustling market on Saturday’s. Also don’t forget in Turkey it is custom to barter for the price of your goods to help ensure you get the best price, so practice your haggling skills.
Some of the best attractions in the town include the Castle of St Peter with its fascinating maritime museum, or alternatively if you don’t mind a bit of exploring there are numerous lesser-known and interesting historical sights in the nearby area, including Ephesus, one of the best preserved archaeological sites in the world, which shows examples of Roman life that are second only to Pompeii.
