Dumfries Holidays 2012

Dumfries at a Glance

The capital of the stunning Dumfries and Galloway region, Dumfries is a market town in the south west region of Scotland. The region’s lively capital, the town is known as the ‘Queen of the South’and is clouded in a dreamy atmosphere, partly due to its association with the famed romantic poet, Robert Burns.

Local Sights

  • As you wander the town’s streets you will see pretty little cottages and town houses, painted in pastel blues, greens and creams, happily blended with the red sandstone buildings. A statue of Robert Burns appears on the High Street, and you can tour across the town with him in mind, on the Burns Heritage Trail. You will visit the tavern that happily enjoyed his company over the last five years of his life, as well as his tomb and the Robert Burns Centre found in a riverside sandstone mill.
  • If you want the best view of the town, head to the camera obscura, where you can see a stunning panoramic view of the district. There is also an art gallery here, showcasing the work of some local artists.

Top Attractions

  • Amongst the historical tales and cultural sights there are a number of shops and restaurants where you can indulge in some retail therapy or become accustomed to the typically friendly nature of the local Scots. Once the sun sets there are even a number of bars and a few nightclubs where you can let your hair down.
