Dunfermline Holidays 2012

Dunfermline at a Glance

Dunfermline is a town found in Fife, Scotland. It is a town of particularly historic significance, as well as providing a wealth of retail and leisure opportunities to both those who live there and those who visit. It’s a great base for discovering the surrounding area of Fife, as well as Edinburgh, which is only 17 miles away.

Architectural Sights

  • Home to some of the most amazing sights in the whole of Scotland, Dunfermline is thought to be one of the ancient capitals of the country. Dunfermline Abbey is a stunning building attracting thousands upon thousands of visitors every year. With a history that dates back to the 11th century, it is where you can also see the tomb of King Robert the Bruce. You can also see Dunfermline Royal Palace here, which sits next to the Abbey.
  • Outside of Dunfermline, just twenty minutes away, is Aberdour Castle, a 13th century fortified residence with a walled garden and beautiful terraces. Having been home to noble families for over 500 years, its walls were extended in the 15th, 16th and 17th centuries, making it an interesting example of ancient architecture.

Exploring Dunfermline

  • Taking a wander across the streets of the town will give you a feel for just how historical it is, but if you fancy a change of scenery, the Pittencreiff Park is worth a look. Purchased by Andrew Carnegie, once the richest man in the world and born in Dunfermline, it is a blend of garden landscape, a museum and greenhouses.
