Falkirk at a Glance
Falkirk is a town found in the Central Lowlands area of Scotland. It sits nestled in the Fourth Valley, just around twenty miles from both Edinburgh and Glasgow. A town surrounded by history and tales of days gone by, Falkirk is a wonderful town to explore.
Discovering Falkirk
- The Antonine Wall is one significant sight in the town. Built when the Roman Emperor Antonius Pius reigned, you can see the wall running through the town, and to several roman forts that are sprinkled around the outskirts of Falkirk.
- The Steeple is the clock tower found in the High Street and is surrounded by intrigue. Said to be the site of public floggings and hangings, it is a slightly sinister and mysterious place to visit.
- The Falkirk wheel, built in 2001, is not a historical sight, but is something worth seeing all the same. It is the only rotating boat lift in the world, and was built to connect the Union Canal with the Forth and Clyde Canal. It’s unique shape and form echoes the work of a modern sculptor.
Entertainment and Attractions
- The high street is a shopaholics dream, and with three shopping centers as well, you’ll find all the major brands. Once the evening comes there is a choice of restaurants to dine in, some serving traditional food, and others with a more continental menu.
- If you feel like venturing further, the town of Stirling is home to a beautiful castle, as is Linlithgow. Also it is well worth taking a look at the city of Edinburgh as it's just a short journey away.
