Barnsley is a large town that lies on the River Dearne situated in southern Yorkshire and its first historical reference dates back to 1086.

Brass Bands of Barnsley

  • Well known for its connection and proud tradition of brass bands and rose to fame in 1996 following the release of the feature film ‘Brassed Off’. The Grimethorpe Colliery Band is probably the country’s most famous brass band and can now be located as the ‘Artist in Residence’ at the Royal College of Music in London. Also a devoted footballing community, with the local club Barnsley FC that currently resides in the Championship of the English League.
  • Culture for the Masses

    • Barnsley has a wealth of listed buildings and heritage sites that are suitable for the whole family to enjoy. One that must be visited is Cannon Hall Museum. It is home to a vast collection of fine furniture, ceramics, glassware and paintings. The house adopted its name in the late 13th century but it is believed that it dates all the way back to 1090BC.
    • Wentworth Castle gardens should also be on the list of things to see while on holiday in Barnsley. This 500-acre estate holds regular flower festivals and other agricultural events, and is home to a wealth of beautifully kept grounds.
