Music in Louisiana
- One third of Louisianans are African American, a cultural legacy from the times of slavery. Unusually, Louisianan slaves were permitted to publicly maintain their musical west African culture of song and dance. Arguably it was this that led Louisiana to become the music mecca it is today, with jazz and blues stemming from African rhythms. This influence is concentrated in New Orleans, making the city a must for visitors to the state.
- Mardi Gras Carnival is renowned for its dazzling parades and costumes. The carnival itself takes place on 21st February in New Orleans, but Mardi Gras celebrations are held across the state around this time. The Carnival is an unforgettable night of music, dancing, good food and plenty to drink. With special family orientated celebrations too, this spectacular party is a must for visitors of all ages.
- Although Louisiana holds hundreds of music festivals throughout the year, the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage festival is one of the biggest. Spread over seven days, the festival showcases the wealth of Louisianan musical genre. The multiple venues hold live performances of not only jazz and blues, but gospel, hip-hop and salsa too.
Culture in Louisiana
- Take some quiet time from the musical bombardment in New Orleans by wandering around the beautiful French quarter. Louisiana was named after the French king Louis XIV when the French first colonised the area in the 15th Century. Admire this European legacy in the architecture of the French quarter.
- Lafayette is the centre of Cajun culture in Louisiana. The Cajuns are descendants of French Acadians, Acadia now forming part of Canada. Visit the Acadian Culture Centre in Lafayette to learn more about the Cajuns, and visit nearby Vermillionville, a Cajun settlement dating from the 18th Century.
- Alexandria in the heart of Louisiana is rich in Native American Indian history, the area’s first inhabitants before European colonisation. Away from the tourist hub of the Louisiana coast, Alexandria is ideal for those who like their sight seeing less crowded. Natchitoches town is the oldest permanent American Indian settlement, and well worth a visit.
