Silicon Valley is the name given to the area of southern San Francisco that is famous for its electronics and computer industry. The name was given to the region in the 1960’s when the technology industry began to take off; before that the region was known as the Santa Clara Valley and it was famous for its sprawling fields and agriculture. The area is mainly industrial buildings and suburban offices though there are still some areas that retain their original charm.

• The large Roman Catholic Cathedral Basilica of St. Joseph is situated in the downtown area of San Jose. The church was originally built at the beginning of the 19th century, but has been rebuilt three times since.

Restaurants nearer the bay itself specialise more in fish and seafood, but whatever type of cuisine you are looking for you will be sure to find somewhere in the area that tickles your fancy.
• Similarly there are a large number of bars and pubs in the region, especially in downtown San Jose. However if it’s a fun, lively night out you are looking for then head into central San Francisco where there are plenty of exciting bars and clubs that are open all hours.
